Network of Facilities

In addition to educating local eye care providers, the Himalayan Cataract Project develops a sustainable eye care infrastructure by creating, staffing, and mentoring eye care facilities throughout the Himalayan region. Our home base is the Tilganga Eye Centre in Kathmandu, Nepal (see Tilganga Eye Centre). While it is an independent facility, it is at the heart of all of our programs, and we are inextricably connected. Directed by Dr. Sanduk Ruit (see Dr. Ruit), Tilganga physicians performed 9,155 surgeries at the Centre in 2003 and provided top quality outpatient care to 130,263 patients. The HCP also mentors several large eye hospitals throughout the region, such as the Golcha Eye Hospital in Biratnagar (Nepal’s second most populous city). Furthermore, the HCP has built the independent Lhasa Eye Center in Tibet and is working with local officials to get the Center fully running. The Project has helped these hospitals improve their business practices and raise their quality of care.
