Cataract & Cornea Workshop in Myanmar

news | Feb 18, 2015

Hands-on cataract and corneal surgery workshop trains local doctors in Myanmar.

Himalayan Cataract Project co-founders Drs. Sanduk Ruit and Geoff Tabin traveled to Myanmar to work with partners from Yangon Eye Hospital for a hands-on training cataract and corneal surgery workshop.

In just two days, the team completed more than 200 cataract surgeries and 11 corneal surgeries working with local ophthalmologists Dr. Aye Chen, Dr. Tin Win and Dr. Khim Oo May.

The team then headed to another surgical event in Taunggyi for high-volume cataract surgery.

In April of last year, HCP was awarded a grant from USAID’s Division of American Schools and Hospitals (ASHA) to support equipment for local eye care personnel. Since 2003, HCP has received numerous grants from USAID/ASHA to support work in Ghana, Nepal and Myanmar.
