Ophthalmology On the Rise in Ghana

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Himalayan Cataract Project's main partner in Ghana, continues to make strides to alleviate unnecessary blindness.

HCP and its partners latest efforts to elevate the status of the field of ophthalmology are paying off. Starting in September, six new recruits will enroll in two three-year MD ophthalmology residency programs — at KATH in Kumasi and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

The additional recruits will make a total of 15 who will benefit from an increased emphasis on hands-on training, including newly added surgical rotations collaborating with the country's highest performing cataract surgeons. They will also have access to state-of-the equipment that just arrived in the country. Theequipment, which is valued at more than $600,000, was donated by Alcon and USAID.
