2009 Funding Goals

The following program goals offer an example of specific Himalayan Cataract Project programs in the Himalayas and Africa and support needed for 2009.

Child Blindness Program, Nepal

The Child Blindness Program is a two-year project through USAID’s A2Z Micronutrient Project to improve pediatric eye care in Nepal. Through the project, ophthalmologists, ophthalmic assistants and community-level volunteers are being trained in pediatric eye care. 2009 is the second year of the program.

Hetauda Eye Hospital, Nepal

With HCP support, the Hetauda Community Eye Hospital opened in November 2008 in Nepal. Hetauda is a Community Eye Hospital staffed by an ophthalmologist and team of ophthalmic assistants trained and mentored by Tilganga Eye Centre. Hetauda will serve as an important cataract surgery center for southern Nepal.  

The HCP is seeking $190,000 in support of Hetauda for 2009 to cover equipment procurement, operations (personnel, consumables & maintenance), and training.

Millennium Villages Project, Africa

In partnership with the Millennium Villages Project, the HCP is overseeing eye care interventions in each of the 12 Millennium Villages in Sub-Saharan Africa with the goal of assessing the impact and cost of community-based screening and treatment initiatives on the burden of avoidable blindness. In 2009, HCP is seeking support for interventions in Pampaida, Nigeria; Mayange, Rwanda; and Dertu, Kenya.

Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Kumasi, Ghana

HCP is spearheading the development of an eye care center at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, Ghana to train ophthalmologists and eye care specialists from throughout the West African region.

The project is spread over five years. In 2009, the HCP is planning to construct the new center, procure 1/3 of the equipment and provide substantial training.  HCP is seeking to raise $392,434 in 2009 support to cover construction services ($120,200), commodities ($125,000), vehicles ($37,234), and program support ($110,000).

Equipment for Tilganga Eye Center, Nepal

HCP has led the expansion efforts at the Tilganga Eye Centre since 2003. Construction of the new building was completed in 2008, and in 2009, HCP is working to finish procuring state of the art surgical equipment and providing educational materials for the residency program.

Commitments: $1,200,000
Outstanding Goal: $210,118

Contribute to Himalayan Cataract Project Endowment

The purpose of the endowment is to provide greater long term security for the work of the Himalayan Cataract Project. The endowment ensures that the training of medical providers and the provision of services from West to East is ongoing.
