Cataract Surgery $20

$20 makes it possible for a blind person to see again. $20 covers the cost of one sight-restoring cataract surgery.

Surgical Equipment $1,500 - $5,000

HCP supports the development of eye care professionals from throughout the developing world — including the provision (or repair) of surgical equipment, supplies and consumables to enable their work. Equipment and consumables range from intraocular lenses, to surgical knives to operating microscopes.

Outreach microsurgical eye clinic or “eye camp” $5,000

An outreach microsurgical eye clinic, or “eye camp”, will screen approximately 1,500 patients and restore sight to 250 people in the Himalayas or in Africa. Additionally, local medical providers will receive further training and ongoing support from the Himalayan Cataract Project.

Train a surgical team to perform modern cataract surgery $10,000

The Himalayan Cataract Project trains teams of medical personnel — a physician, nurse and technician — to perform modern cataract surgery. Ten thousand dollars will support a surgical team to travel to the Tilganga Eye Centre for training and ongoing mentoring.

Establish a community eye care center $50,000

Community eye care centers are an important innovation for delivery in the developing world, as they provide care to the poorest and most unreachable patients. The existing centers are staffed by ophthalmic assistants, trained to provided basic eye care, screen for infection, refer patients to doctors, and assist in cataract camps in their region. A new center will provide care to a population with no existing eye care infrastructure.

Establish a cataract surgery facility in an outlying region $200,000 - $500,000

Cataract surgery facilities are the next step beyond a community eye care center. These facilities are staffed by an ophthalmic assistant and an ophthalmologist who can perform surgery onsite. These centers are fully equipped to handle all but the most specialized cases and are mentored by the Himalayan Cataract Project.
