Remote cataract surgery eye camp $45,250 (10 camps at $4,525)
A remote cataract surgery eye camp will screen 1,500 patients and restore sight to 250 people in Nepal, Tibet, China, Bhutan or Northern India. Additionally, local medical providers will receive further training and ongoing support from the Tilganga Eye Centre. Currently, the Himalayan Cataract Project supports 10 camps per year.
Train a surgical team to perform modern cataract surgery $60,000 (6 teams at $10,000)
The Himalayan Cataract Project trains teams of medical personnel- a physician, nurse and technician - to perform modern cataract surgery (See Education). Ten thousand dollars will support a surgical team to travel to the Tilganga Eye Centre for training and ongoing mentoring. The Himalayan Cataract Project supports an average of six surgical teams per year.
Establish a primary eye care center $150,000 (3 centers at $50,000)
Primary eye care centers are an important innovation for delivery in the developing world, as they provide care to the poorest and most unreachable patients (See Primary Eye Clinics). Our four existing centers are staffed by ophthalmic assistants, trained to provided basic eye care, screen for infection, refer patients to doctors, and assist in cataract camps in their region. A new center will provide care to a population with no existing eye care infrastructure. The Himalayan Cataract Project establishes three new primary eye care centers each year.
Establish a cataract surgery facility in an outlying region $200,000 (2 facilities at $100,000)
Cataract surgery facilities are the next step beyond a primary eye care center. These facilities are staffed by an ophthalmic assistant and an ophthalmologist who can perform surgery onsite. These centers are fully equipped to handle all but the most specialized cases and are mentored by the senior medical team at the Tilganga Eye Centre. The Himalayan Cataract Project establishes two new cataract surgery facilities each year.
Equip the expanded Tilganga Eye Centre $500,000
$500,000 will cover the cost of outfitting the Expansion (see Tilganga Eye Centre) with state of the art surgical equipment and providing educational materials for the residency program. The cost is approximately $150,000 per floor.
Complete Phase II of the Tilganga Eye Centre Expansion $1,200,000
Phase II of the expansion will add three additional floors to house an operating theatre, recovery beds, research space, and a microbiology lab, and allow for the expansion of the Nepal Eye Bank and intraocular lens factory, currently housed in the outpatient facility. We have raised the funds for Phase I of the expansion and are looking to finish the project. This gift will complete the expansion initiative and firmly establish Tilganga as an eye center of excellence for years to come.
Create an endowment for the Himalayan Cataract Project $2,000,000
The purpose of the endowment is to provide greater long term security for the Himalayan Cataract Project. The endowment would ensure that the training of medical providers and the provision of services from West to East be ongoing.
