USAID American Schools and Hospitals Abroad visits Tilganga

USAID and HCP representatives

On January 24th, 2013, two representatives from USAID’s Division of American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA) visited Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology (TIO) in Kathmandu, Nepal. ASHA has been a primary funding partner of HCP and TIO since 2003. Deputy Director Gary Barrett and Engineer Mark Tipton toured the 130,000-square-foot facility, participated in a presentation by Tilganga administrators, and observed live surgery in both the refractive surgery unit and main operating theatre.

“We were excited to have ASHA back again for a visit,” said Job Heintz. “Gary and Mark explored the facility and examined much of the equipment, and it was especially gratifying to share details of TIO’s training programs for eye care providers from many developing countries, and the ripple effect that this training is having on service delivery in places of immense need around the world.” This is the third visit to the facility by USAID representatives since 2009 when the expansion was officially opened.
