HCP Newsletter - April 2005
Greetings,
Happy Spring. The first quarter has flown by and we wanted to update
you on the Tilganga Eye Centre Expansion project in Kathmandu, Nepal—our most ambitious and far reaching project to date. At the end of
February, we reached a significant milestone with the completion of
Phase I of construction which includes the Foundation/Basement and
Ground Floor housing the outpatient department. We've recently signed
a contract with the existing contractor for Phase II which includes
the First and Second Floors housing specialty clinics and additional
operating theatres.
In early May, we will be sending out a detailed description of the
project to date as well as the future of the project.

As many of you probably know, the political situation in Nepal has
been rather tenuous as of late with increasing friction between the
King, the political parties and the Maoists. For further information,
please visit The New York Times or the other international news
sources such as the BBC or The Economist.

We have been in constant communication with our partners in Kathmandu
and are planning to have a staff member there in mid-May to check in.

Michael Brown of Serac Adventure Films created a film entitled "Light
of the Himalaya" that followed co-directors Dr. Geoff Tabin and Dr.
Sanduk Ruit through two remote eye camps accompanied by a team of
North Face athletes who went on to summit a previously unclimbed
Himalayan peak. The film was named Best Colorado Film at the Boulder
International Film Festival this past February. The film was produced
for Rush HD (cable high definition television) where it is currently
being featured in The North Face Expedition Series. To view a trailer

Co-Director Dr. Geoff Tabin has just returned from Kumasi, Ghana where
he spent time with University of Utah colleagues teaching local
surgeons modern cataract surgery. Over the course of the one-week
workshop, the team completed 300 surgeries. We will send further
details and photographs in the next eNewsletter.
Sincerely,
