Tilganga Expansion Project - Timeline & Highlights

2001

Noting that Tilganga is "at the heart of all our programs and must thrive for our programs to succeed," HCP Board of Directors commit to its "dramatic expansion," intended to provide "more surgical operating theaters, more room to host outpatients, an inpatient ward, and the capacity to support our new ophthalmology residency program, which with the existing ophthalmic assistant program will help alleviate the shortage of qualified eye care providers in Nepal and the entire Himalayan region."

2002

HCP seeks support from USAID's Office of American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA). Tilganga staff collaborate to design a facility that will meet present and future needs.

2003

  • Generous grants help set the stage…
  • ASHA awards $300,000 for Phase I
  • Local architect/engineering firm develops preliminary design drawings based on staff input
    Construction sign. March 05.

2004

  • Initial environmental examination
  • Multidisciplinary design drawings & specifications complete
  • Soil Foundation Report & Recommendations
  • Secure over a half million dollars worth of equipment for the expansion at half the cost, establishing the Tilganga-Zeiss Centre for Ophthalmic Education
  • Phase II proposal submitted to ASHA
  • Multi-disciplinary building committee established to review prequalification documents of bidders, review financial bids and negotiate contract for services with successful bidder
  • Invitation for Bids published
  • Building Committee opens bids of 14 competing Nepalese constructions companies
Ground floor construction, formwork. Sept 05.    

2005

  • Construction Services Contract finalized with ANK Inc.
  • George Like visits Tilganga, tours project site
  • Site protection work commences: site clearing, layout, earthwork/excavation
  • Formwork, bar bending and laying of reinforcement bars
  • Basement retaining wall complete
  • Final approval granted for Environmental Impact Assessment - Tilganga becomes 1st hospital in Nepal to comply with environmental regulations
  • Mandatory 3-year environmental monitoring commences
  • ASHA awards $400,000 for Phase II
  • The Fred Hollows Foundation pledges $225,000 for Phase II
    Environmental monitoring and engineer meeting. Sept 05.

2006

  • Contract Agreement for Phase II negotiated
  • Phase I completed
  • Phase II underway
Construction of First Floor. Dec 05.    

The Expansion project could not have gotten off the ground without the early and generous support of the Fairweather, Freeman and Starr Foundations, as well as countless other generous individuals and foundations.
