Greetings,
We have some exciting news to share about both of our Directors. We
are pleased to announce that Co-Director Dr. Sanduk Ruit was recently
awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Peace and International
Understanding for the year 2006. Dr. Ruit is the third Nepali to
receive the prestigious Magsaysay award which is widely recognized as
Asia's highest honor and referred to as Nobel Prize of Asia. Dr. Ruit
is being honored for "placing Nepal at the forefront of developing safe, effective and economical procedures for cataract surgery,
enabling the needlessly blind in even the poorest countries to see

Co-Director Dr. Geoff Tabin has been nominated for a Volvo for life
Award. In honor of the Volvo for life Awards' 5th Anniversary, the
general public is being called upon to select an all-time hero. There
are five heroes from the past five years in each state. From now
until February 4, 2007, you can vote for a hero. Public vote
determines Awards Finalists and Winners will be selected by a panel of
judges. The grand winner will receive a Volvo for life and nine
additional winners will receive between $25,000 and $50,000 for acharity of their choice. To cast your vote please go the following

Dr. Tabin leaves this week for a meeting with the International Agency
for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) which will be held at the World
Health Organization in Geneva. Following the meeting, he will meet
Dr. Ruit for two weeks of cataract surgery workshops and eye camps at
our clinic in Kalimpong (northern India) and program sites in Bhutan.
