The HCP and Tilganga teach and perform world-class eye surgery. |
Education at Tilganga
In addition to curing tens of thousands of cases of blindness annually with international quality eye care, Tilganga is at the core of ophthalmic education in the Himalaya (see Education). The training provided at Tilganga is propagating world-class eye care throughout a region that suffers from a crisis of preventable and treatable blindness. Tilganga and the HCP foster ophthalmic education at all levels. Tilganga is the home of the new ophthalmic assistant training program, which is supplying the region with vital mid-level eye care professionals. It will host a new ophthalmology residency program, which will begin with two students in September 2004. The Centre also holds skills-transfer programs for doctors from such places as Nepal, Tibet, China, Pakistan, Sikkim, India, Argentina, Myanmar, South Africa, Thailand, the United States, and Ethiopia. In addition, it mentors several major eye hospitals in the Himalayan region.
