Financial Sustainability
The Himalayan Cataract Project and the Tilganga Eye Centre have been able to bridge the gap between high-quality and affordability. Tilganga designed a cost-recovery program (see Cost-Recovery) in which about 2/3 of the patients pay full or part of the USD $120.00 for cataract surgery, and 1/3 pay nothing at all. This program, which is used at all HCP facilities, has rendered Tilganga financially self-sustaining. Tilganga’s outreach programs, however, are still dependent upon outside donations from organizations such as the HCP and the Fred Hollows Foundation.
