Research at Tilganga

All of the doctors at Tilganga are involved in research projects, as are the staff ophthalmic assistants (see publications). Tilganga has been on the cutting edge of research regarding eye care delivery in the developing world since its inception. Dr. Ruit was instrumental in the Nepal Blindness Survey, and epidemiology continues to be an important aspect of the Tilganga research focus. Dr. Richard Litwin, an HCP board member, was the first person to perform cataract surgery using an intraocular lens implant in Nepal (see Richard Litwin, MD). Dr. Ruit then worked strenuously to introduce this microsurgical intraocular lens implant technique in the region. Through his research and prolific practice he developed a sutureless cataract surgery technique. He also developed an affordable way to deliver high-quality eye care and cataract surgery in remote regions. HCP Co-Director Geoffrey Tabin has also contributed significant ophthalmology research. These two directors are frequent publishers in peer-reviewed ophthalmology journals, such as Cornea, British Journal of Ophthalmology, and Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and have tirelessly given lectures to ophthalmologic societies in America and throughout the world. Recent articles have ranged in content from the improvement in anesthesia for children in the developing world and pediatric cataract surgery to postoperative outcomes for sutureless cataract extraction and lens implantation to lens power calculations for IOLs in the developing world. This research is highly influential in bringing high-quality eye care to the region.
