Ophthalmic Subspecialists

Tilganga is staffed by a full compliment of ophthalmic subspecialists who have been trained by the HCP through international fellowships. Dr. Reeta Gurung is performing one of the highest volumes of emergent corneal transplants of any surgeon in the world. After his vitreoretinal surgical fellowship in Australia, Dr. Govinda Paudyal has returned to become the only full retinal surgeon in Nepal and sustains a high volume of surgery. Additionally, he is the academic director of Tilganga’s new residency program. Dr. Jaya Thaker returned in July 2002 from a pediatric ophthalmology fellowship at the Storm Eye Hospital of the University of South Carolina. She is the only pediatric specialist in Nepal. After a glaucoma fellowship in Australia, Dr. Suman Thapa has returned to work at Tilganga and is beginning a glaucoma awareness program in Nepal. Dr. Saiju Rohit returned to Tilganga in February 2004 after a year of oculoplastic surgical training in Australia. Most recently, a new uveitis specialist, Dr. Anu Manandhar, has been trained in San Francisco, as well as a neuro-ophthalmologist, Dr. Roit. These doctors will be the teachers of the next generation of ophthalmologists in the region.
