Bhutan

In Bhutan we are in the fourth year of our five year agreement with the government of Bhutan to improve ophthalmic services in this wonderful nation. The primary focus of the government of Bhutan is not on gross domestic product, but officially on increasing the people’s gross domestic happiness. Our program in Bhutan is fully supported financially by the philanthropy of Mr. Mark Haynes Daniell, IV of Singapore. We trained three Bhutanese doctors to perform cataract surgery and are in the process of training three full ophthalmologists, as well as twenty additional ophthalmic assistants. On top of this, we are doing public health ophthalmology education in remote regions and in schools. We are paying for all IOL’s used in cataract surgery in Bhutan and providing eyeglasses for all children who require them. The Himalayan Cataract Project will return to Bhutan in the fall of 2004 for two weeks of remote eye camps and skills transfer workshops.
