HCP works closely with The Lhasa Institute of Eye Care and helped establish the center in 2005. The Institute serves the Lhasa region as well as the outlying area through outreach work. The Institute also serves as an important training site for the region. 

Since its start in 2005, the Institute serves approximately 115 outpatients and performs approximately 22 surgeries a month. The institute has 2 ophthalmologists, 1 head nurse, 1 administrator and 2 support staff.

HCP and Tilganga have worked in collaboration with Tibet Vision Project, Vision Tibet and additional local partners including, Qinghai Tibetan Research Centre in Xining and Hwolung and Tibet Development Fund in Lhasa.

Recent Projects in China / Tibet

A 5-Day Eye Camp in Lhasa: A team screened 1,114 patients and performed 344 cataract surgeries.

A Cataract Surgical Workshop in the Qinghai Province: A team led by Dr. Tabin and Dr. Ruit with two local eye doctors screened 1,386 patients and performed 651 surgeries. More than 20 eye doctors observed.

Currently, half the 2.5 million Tibetan population becomes blind from treatable cataracts by age 70, and many are blind by age 40.
