China and Tibet
The Himalayan Cataract Project continued to train doctors and performed a series of large skills-transfer surgical eye camps in both the Tibet and Qinghai Province in 2004. At these camps we performed over 1,000 sight-restoring cataract surgeries, while training our ophthalmologists at their respective clinics. A primary ophthalmic center has recently been built in Shekar, and we have also now fully equipped and staffed an independent eye hospital in Lhasa. We are also working to establish a similar training site in the Amdo area of Qinghai and to develop improved cataract care in the city of Xining (See China Summer 2004).
