HCP Co-Founder Dr. Sanduk Ruit is Recipient of Padma Shri Award

The Indian government has awarded Dr. Ruit with Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India

According to a statement released by the government of India, Dr. Sanduk Ruit was chosen because his 1980’s innovations that led to a 90% reduction in the cost of cataract surgery, including the distribution of low-cost intraocular lenses to over 30 countries; his efforts to treat 2,500 patients every week with fees waived for those who cannot afford care; and a lifetime dedicated to restoring eyesight to thousands of people across Asia and Africa.

When talking to The Himalayan Times, Dr Ruit thanked the government and the people of India, as well as his patients and well-wishers, for the recognition.

“This will definitely deliver a positive message from Nepal globally,” he said. “We have made modern eye care affordable and accessible. I am happy that the Nepal developed technology is benefiting people from Asia, Africa and Latin America.”
