High-Volume Cataract Campaign | Harar, Ethiopia

news | Feb 10, 2015

Bisidimo Hospital in Harar, Ethiopia was home to a high-volume cataract campaign that restored sight to more than 900 people this February.

Himalayan Cataract Project Board Member Dr. Matt Oliva, volunteer Dr. Jason Dimmig, and local partners including HCP trainee Dr. Alemu Kerie conducted a multi-day outreach at Bisidimo Hospital in Harar, Ethiopia.

Together, they performed 924 surgeries over the course of just six days. Drs. Oliva and Dimmig were also joined by former HCP trainee Dr. Alemu Kerie.

“It was inspiring to see how HCP is working to improve eye care in Ethiopia on all levels," said Dr. Jason Dimming. "HCP is involved from the ground up, helping with training the nursing staff to the physicians. This effort was evident as the Ethiopian team at Bisidimo Hospital was exceptional. Eliminating cataract blindness truly is a team effort, and the Bisidimo team was extraordinary and should be congratulated.”
