John Abbott, Ed.D. is HCP’s Director of Education & Alumni. In this role, John works closely with HCP staff and clinical volunteers to provide strategic leadership to further development of a comprehensive, results-oriented, education and training program, focused on expanding existing opportunities and upgrading current practices with a view towards scaling.
John holds a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership & Policy from the University of Vermont, an MA in Education from St. Michael’s College and BA in English Literature from Bates College. He brings 30 years of leadership development, skill competency training, organizational development and assessment experience. John began his career providing wilderness programs for adjudicated teens as a course director with the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School in Newry, Maine. John directed the outdoor leadership programs at UVM for more than 20 years and remains an adjunct lecturer in the Parks, Recreation and Tourism program in the Rubenstein School for Environment & Natural Resources. His passion for teaching and adventure in remote mountain regions worldwide, has taken him to the US mountain West, South & Central America, Eastern Europe, Iceland, Greenland, Baffin Island and the Canadian Arctic. John can be found mountain biking, skiing, paddling, hiking, climbing and camping with his family (and dog Zephyr) whenever possible.
